Scavenger Hunt

Snow glitters in the blinding azure sky, flurrying and fluttering.  Curiously, there is not a cloud to be seen.  Four year old Lizzy clumps to the backyard.  Her mudruckers are on the wrong feet.  She stomps through bronze grass, searching.  Lizzy peers under silver leaves.  What's hiding under there?

Crocus peek out.

"Look, Mommy!  Spring!"

Bare

Another 5 Minute Friday ... one word, five minutes, no editing.  Ready, set, go!

Five Minute Friday

Bare

Right now, we're wearing layers.  Two shirts and a cardigan.  Capri pants and tights.  And from the look of Aaron's hamper, perhaps several pairs of socks.  It's not that it's so very cold, right now - it's just that it's not warm.

Even now as I sit here, I have a mug of coffee at hand to warm my chilly fingers and I haven't taken my shoes off because I don't want my tootsies to get cold.  As for Lydia, she's sockless, but she is also running around an awful lot right now and working up a good little sweat.

As for me, I am looking forward to Spring for one big reason:  less clothes.  I want to see some of my kids' little bare parts:  their toes, their elbows, their bonked up and bruised shins and their bony knees.  I want shed a layer or two and enjoy some sunshine on my shoulders and legs, the warmth of spring kissing our bare parts.

And, quite honestly, I want less laundry to wash.  Bare skin means only one layer of smaller bits of clothing and that means a few less loads to sort, load and fold.  Which hopefully will translate to time outside letting my bare skin breath ... my white, desperately-in-need-of-some-sun skin.

C'mon, Spring!

Snapshots of Spring Break ~ More Color!

As I wrote on Monday, we planned a number of crafts last week.  The kids enjoyed getting paint on their projects and themselves.  The kids delighted in designing their handprints.  And the kids astonished themselves with their abilities to turn a lump of clay into ladybugs, snails and daggers.

But Mommy had a crafty week, too!  I also enjoyed painting and squishing around clay ... and tackling a project that I had pinned on Pinterest several weeks ago.

I was on the look out for something fun and Springy for our front door and found this.  Now ... I don't read Japanese, but I am a visual learner.  And I'm also a good faker.  With a few peeks at this project, I headed to Hobby Lobby and improvised.

In place of the green foam wreath, I chose a straw wreath that was wrapped in plastic.  I left the plastic on to keep it from self-destructing and in the process saved about $5 on the price of the wreath.  Awesome!

I didn't know how much eye-lash yarn I would need, so I bought two.  It only took one.  So now I get to take one back and put $7 back in my pocket.  Yahoo!

In place of the flower ribbon, I picked up a small bouquet of silk flowers in a variety of colors (because I really like color).  I also had a handful of random buttons laying around so I decided to use those for the center of flowers.  I used some floral wire that I had in my craft stash and by running a piece of wire up through the flower, through the button and back down, I had a nice little stick to press into the straw wreath.  That allowed the flowers to stand up and away from the "green grass", too.

I chose the purple wired ribbon to add a little more color and tied a big bow for the top while still leaving plenty for the loop at the top.

Finally, I printed my little words, "bare feet welcome..." off computer.  Before attaching them to floral wire, I "aged" the paper by crumbling it up a bit and running over the paper with a flesh-toned colored pencil.  When I had it appealingly crinkled and colored, I poked the supporting wires into the wreath and then tweaked it until I like it.

Ta-dah!

Spring Has Sprung!

If you were to step out my front door today, here are a few of the splendid signs of Spring that you might enjoy ...

First, you would hear the sweet "tweet-tweet-tweeting" of the birds that live in the tree by our front window.  The little sparrows that dart in and out of the evergreen have built a number of nests over the years and we enjoy hearing their little babies squeaking excitedly as Mom and Dad return home with a morsel to share.

Next, you might spot our vinca vine poking up in the front flower-bed.  The tiny violet blooms that are peeking their heads up from among the bark and leaves are a delightful surprise!  How they have managed to wriggle their way up and out from the mass of strawberry plants that surround them is proof of their tenacity and determination!

Precious, Purple Posies

A few steps out into our lawn, and you will find clusters of little, golden dandelions.  Here and there across the grass you will find these little bundles of sunshine.  My husband isn't thrilled about them, but Petey is delighted!  Also, my girls are rather exuberant about plucking the little flowers to bring in to Mommy:  inexpensive, little bouquets of love.

Dandy, Delicious Dandelions

If you head to the backyard, you will encounter our raised beds - ready and waiting for planting.  In one corner of a planter you might find this delicious explosion of green!  Truly delicious because these are our garlic and chive plants.  I am beside myself with excitement to begin using fresh herbs and home-grown vegetables in my cooking again ... an explosion of green on our dinner plates, too!

Heaven-sent, Hardy Herbs

In the back flower bed, you might find these little fellows.  This is our first year planting snap-peas and we are excited to watch our little sweetie-peas climb up the trellis and produce a bushel of tender little bites of sweetness.  I can picture our kids outside grazing this summer ... hand, mouths and bellies full of those splendid little green guys!  Hope they save a few for me. :)

Scrumptiously Snack-able Sweet-peas

If you look to the sky, there are a few possible spring delights for you to see.  On any given spring day here in Colorado, the weather will range from ...
"crystal clear, it hurts your eyes it's so bright" blue sky to
"cotton-ball clouds" puttering across a crisp blue sky to
"rainclouds gathering, grey and menacing from the west" sky to
"no blue to be found" slate sky with glimpses of skittering snowflakes.
And if you don't particularly like the sky you see right now ... come back out in 15 minutes and you'll see something different.

Dark & Drippy

Crisp & Clear

The final sign that spring has finally come to the Grand Valley would be ...

Spring Clean-up!

Rounded-up Rejected Rubbish

Every year at this time junk, branches, furniture and building materials begin appearing on the streets.  If you live within the city limits, you can drag out anything and everything (including your kitchen sink) and have it hauled away for free.  This is the season to purge your house, yard, shed and garage of unwanted garbage and not feel bad about it.  In this picture you can't see the dried-up Christmas tree (that would be ours), the tree stump, the TV cabinet (also ours), the bundle of branches or the BBQ (ours, again).  Actually, you can't see the BBQ because somebody took it home ...

And that leads me to the truly amazing aspect of Spring Clean-Up:  the number of people who drive around town and claim someone else's trash as their treasure!  Most of the items that we put out in the pile actually get loaded up and carted away by someone other than the city trucks.  In fact, as I was taking these snapshots, I caught this last one:

TV cabinet Tied-up in a Truck

Yep ... Spring has sprung!

Anybody need a dried-up Christmas tree?  Only used once.

Wordsworth, I Am Not

Today for a little something different, I am choosing #4 from Mama Kat's writing prompts and trying my hand at a little poetry.  Don't get too excited ... there's a reason why I write essays. :)

Here goes!

Hello, Spring, so glad you've come!
Only the warm sunshine is enough to make me want to
Poke my little head out and have a look around.
Everywhere my little daffodil eyes look, I see green.

.. and ...

Heaven answered our need for a Savior,
Opened wide His arms to die on a cross,
Poured out His life so that we can live.
Easter is a celebration of spring ... eternal.

Two wonderful reasons I love Spring! :)

The hope of picnics, park dates, evening walks and toasty sunshine on my face with every fresh little green bud that pushes its way through the dead, drab brownness of winter past.

The hope of peace, faith and love through the powerful and miraculous resurrection of our Lord, Savior and Friend ... a bright light of redemption shining in the dark dullness of our hard world.

I hope for a little hope for you today ...
